Part 2 - Why do we play Basketball? - Sensory Integration

This three-part blog series is dedicated to all parents by addressing, what can learning basketball bring to their children?

"Why do we play basketball? If one was to ask this question to every child who loves the sport of basketball, you are most likely to get a different answer each time.

Why does basketball have such a great charm for children? At LC Elite Basketball, we believe basketball provides children with a lot of happiness, but not just happiness, it also aids Children's psychological and physical growth.

The second part of this blog series will cover the psychological aspect of children’s growth and development in the form of Sensory integration

Sensory integration refers to the learning process in which the brain and the body coordinate with each other. It means that the body effectively uses its senses in the environment, and uses different sensory pathways (vision, hearing, taste, smell, touch, vestibular and proprioception, etc.) from the environment. The information obtained from the process is input into the brain, and the brain processes the information (including interpretation, comparison, enhancement, inhibition, connection, and unification), and the ability to make adaptive responses, referred to as "sensory integration".

At LC Elite Basketball training, we believe that Basketball is a very comprehensive project, different from single-player sports such as track and field or tennis. First of all, basketball emphasizes many abilities such as cooperation, confrontation, and adaptability. It not only requires players to manage their own sports behaviour, but also requires the ability to analyze and respond to multiple variables such as teammates, opponents, and the environment.

To deal with such changing and complex factors, the child's brain will actively mobilize every nerve to make the best judgment in court. Basketball training can make a child's brain more responsive and multitasking.

The growth of these abilities is not only reflected in basketball. Several studies have shown that the improvement of sensory integration ability will be transformed and reflected in different disciplines, sports and complex tasks. A survey conducted by the University of Copenhagen interviewed 63 A retired professional basketball players who used to be point guards, 82 per cent of whom have served as executives in related industries after retirement. Years of basketball training are of great help to their overall management and operation. When they can analyze and make decisions on the spot, they can also overcome difficulties in life and work, which is very important for the development of children.
